Finding a decent hotel on the island of Amorgos, Greece, is no easy task. Which means that this is one of the few islands of the Cyclades that has still not yet been overly developed. I did manage to find the Aegiolis, a small modern hotel perched up high above the main town of Katapola. Why Amorgos? Well, the landscape is dramatic with plunging coastlines and boat-access only beaches. The stoic monastery is also breath-taking (warning: don’t show up there in a bikini as all women must be fully covered, this I learned this the hard way). But maybe the thing that this island is most famous for is the 1988 movie The Big Blue starring Patricia Arquette & Jean Reno. Haven’t seen it? Don’t worry, the Aegialis plays it every night at 8pm on a large screen.
