Sophisticated tapas + friendly vibes

Bar Sal Gorda is located just off the Plaza Alfalfa on a quiet, narrow street that serves as a kind of walking thorough-fare for connecting the old historic town to ‘mid-town’.

The premises are on the corner of a fairly narrow building with a bar / tapas venue on the ground floor, a dining area on the first floor, and the kitchen on the top floor. We sat down shortly after 8pm and within minutes, all of the tables were occupied, with a quasi-lineup that slowly built up over time along the neighbouring streets.

The tapas are traditional with a twist.  If it is available on the menu, we always order the Patatas Bravas (it’s like the mac + cheese of Spain, every restaurant has their own version). This one was by far our favourite in Sevilla. It has the perfect balance of heat with aoili, and the potatoes were crispy and golden, small bite-sized cubes, yet not over-cooked.  Next came their chicken wings served in a fire-truck red ceramic hand; a shrimp risotto that could rival anyone made in Italy; and a smoked Caesar salad with chick bits (yes, that is correct — the entire salad was smoked and presented to us in a ‘dumb waiter’ glass cover with smoke and all).

However the best surprise was the extremely friendly, chilled out service that we were thankful to enjoy throughout our meal.  This is not easy to come by in Sevilla.
