A collection of small things, plus alcohol.
Located in a former grocery store in the area of Principe Real, the Bar Pavilhão Chinês is one of the most unique and intriguing spots to have an aperitif in all of Lisbon.
Reminiscent of the ‘wander rooms’ of the 16th and 17th centuries, the bar is comprised of five distinct rooms, each decorated in their own special way. The Paivlhão opened in 1986 when owner Luís Pinto Coelho was in need to display his collection of small things. When wandering from one room to the next, you could spend hours ogling the hundreds if not thousands of pieces on display: Figurines, paintings, dolls, planes, miniatures, war helmets, medals, tin soldiers, military artifacts, teapots, statuettes, maps, flags…
And when you’re done looking at the museum of artifacts, you can settle into one of the upholstered banquettes and order something from their long list of cocktails, served by one of their wait staff smartly dressed in full waistcoat, bow-tie and creased black pant. Or if you’re up for some snooker, in the back there are a couple of tables waiting for you.
