Vegeterian brunch done right.  And, avec dogs.

Named after one of the owner’s dogs, Basilio recently opened on the small yet resto-packed street of Rua dos Bacalhoeiros (literally: street of the cod fishing boats) and wasted no time in attracting queues of people keen on eating healthy, delicious vegetarian stuff in a chic-and-unshabby locale just minutes from the heart of the city, the Praça do Comércio.

Walk in and you will be confronted by a dozen well chosen posters of American sitcoms past such as Full House, Who’s The Boss, and Beverly Hills 90120. Then enjoy an Instagram-worthy interior adeptly mixing repainted vintage school chairs with a nostalgic 80’s hotel breakfast room vibe, accented by marble table-tops and an abundance of plants.

Local influencers will tell you that unlike his well-trafficked sister restaurants, Nicolau and Amelia, Basilio has no brunch menu.  But a closer look at the menu might say otherwise.  Eggs Bennie, fluffy pancakes with maple syrup (true story), bowls of granola with yogurt and fresh fruit, a selection of fruit smoothies that will cure any hangover — these all sound, to me, like the makings of a major brunch situation.  And if you’re having a hard time choosing something, why not get them all for the the incredible prix-fixe of 15 (oh, and that also includes a coffee — add 0.75 if you want it with soy milk).

But by far my favorite thing about Basilio is their dog policy, put simply: Bring your dog.  On the odd day that it rains in Lisbon and you can’t sit outside with your pooch while you chow down, it’s such a relief to know that there is somewhere you can bring your dog with you inside — again, while you chow down — and have him or her be treated so royally by their doting, sunshine staff.
